MIDLAND, MICH. – The Northwood University Athletic Department has been named the winner of the 2018 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Award of Excellence.

The award is given to a school recognizing campus and community engagement efforts over the past year.

Northwood was honored for the annual "Go M.A.D. day," (Make a Difference) which took place November 3-4, 2017. The community-service based event featured 347 student-athletes across all 18 Northwood varsity sports helping out throughout the Midland community. From across the University 796 students, faculty, staff, coaches and community members were involved, performing over 2,100 hours of service.

"This is a great day for Northwood University," said Athletic Director Dave Marsh. "We are grateful to the NCAA for recognizing the Northwood family with this prestigious honor.  Go M.A.D. Day is one of the highlight days of the year as the entire student body, faculty, staff and coaches all come together to make a difference in our community."

Northwood was one of 19 finalists for the award, which was broken down by one school from each Division II conference around the country.

"We are honored to be recognized by the NCAA with this award," said Dr. Keith A. Pretty, Northwood University President and Chief Executive Officer.  "At Northwood, Go M.A.D. Day is an opportunity to drive home the concept of giving back and to help our students and athletes learn more about the value of service to community and to one another.

"Giving back is part of the Northwood Idea—our philosophy of ethical and successful leadership—which teaches students how to be successful but also selfless to ensure success for future generations, on the field of play and off."

A committee of athletics administrators determined this year's finalists. The Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee selected the winner, which was announced during the D-II business session at the NCAA Convention in Indianapolis.

"I'm thankful for the recognition from the NCAA," said Andy Cripe, Northwood University Dean of Students. "Go M.A.D. Day is a day when the Northwood family comes together to make a great impact on the Midland community.  It is a day we celebrate the opportunity to make a difference and challenge ourselves to make a difference daily.

"Pat Riepma left an incredible legacy and I am grateful for the way the Northwood family continues to honor him through their service.  I will do my part to make sure that future Northwood students always know what Go M.A.D. means and what a remarkable person Pat was."

By winning the award, Northwood University will receive $1,500 and a nationally televised football or basketball game during the 2018-19 season.  All prize money is intended to be used for future community engagement activities.
