Four GLIAC Schools Ranked in the Top 26 of the First Fall Division II Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings

CLEVELAND – In the first set of fall Division II Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, Western State College (Colo.) has scored a high of 190.00 points. Augustana (S.D.) is close behind, with 172.00 points.

The Mountaineers of Western State (Colo.) took home the men’s cross country national championship and finished in second in the women’s cross country national championship meet. Western State scored in two of the first three championships.

Augustana is in second with a first place finish in women’s cross country and a sixth place finish in the men’s race.

Another Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference member, Adams State (Colo.), is tied for third place with 170.00 points. The Grizzlies earned a second place finish in men’s cross country and a fourth place spot in the women’s cross country national championship. The Lakers of Grand Valley State (Mich.), the 2010-11 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Champions, are also tied for third place. GVSU finished third in both the men’s and women’s cross country championships.

Rounding out the top five is Chico State (Calif.) with 149.00 points. The Wildcats finished fourth in men’s cross country and came in seventh place on the women’s side.

Three conferences have a pair of teams ranked in the top-10, RMAC (Western State, Adams State), GNAC (Alaska Anchorage-6th, Western Washington-9th) and PSAC (Shippensburg-7th, Bloomsburg-10th).

To date, three fall NCAA championships have been completed with the following institutions capturing titles: women’s cross country – Augustana (S.D.); men’s cross country – Western State (Colo.); field hockey - West Chester (Pa.).

The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports -- seven women’s and seven men’s.

The next Division II fall standings will be released Thursday, December 8.
