CLEVELAND – After the completion of six NCAA
Championships, Grand Valley State (Mich.)
currently sits atop the Division II Learfield Sports
Directors’ Cup fall standings. The Lakers finished second in
women’s soccer and placed third in both men’s and
women’s cross country for a total of 260 points.
Chico State (Calif.) is in second with 257 total points. The
Wildcats scored in four championships, finishing third in
women’s soccer, fourth in men’s cross country, seventh
in women’s cross country and 17th in men’s soccer.
Tampa (Fla.) is in third with 224 total points, after finishing
third in women’s volleyball, fifth in women’s soccer,
16th in women’s cross country and 24th in men’s cross
country.
In fourth place are the Orediggers from Colorado School of Mines,
with 198 total points after placing fifth in men’s cross
country, fifth in women’s soccer and 17th in volleyball.
Rounding out the top five is California (Pa.), who finished fifth
in women’s soccer, ninth in men’s soccer and ninth in
volleyball and Western State (Colo.) who finished first in
men’s cross country and second in women’s cross
country. The two schools are in a tie for fifth place with 190
total points.
The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference placed two institutions in
the top five, Colorado School of Mines (4th) and Western State
(5th).
Six of the seven fall NCAA championships have been completed with
the following institutions capturing titles: women’s soccer
– St. Rose (N.Y.); men’s soccer – Fort Lewis
(Colo.); women’s volleyball – Concordia (Minn.);
women’s field hockey – West Chester (Pa.); men’s
cross country – Western State (Colo.); women’s cross
country – Augustana (S.D.).
The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint
effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of
Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each
institution's finish in up to 14 sports -- seven women’s and
seven men’s.
The final Division II fall standings will be released Thursday,
December 21.
