BAY CITY, Mich. – The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) announced Monday (May 11) that Grand Valley State University has claimed its 17th consecutive Presidents’ Trophy after the conclusion of the 2014-15 season. The GLIAC Presidents’ Trophy is commonly referred to the All-Sports Trophy and is awarded at the end of each year of competition to the conference member having demonstrated general excellence in all or most sports. The Lakers have claimed the prize to a league-high 22 times and started their streak of 17 straight during the 1998-99 campaign.
Overall, Grand Valley State amassed 237 points throughout the year with Ashland coming in second with 178.5 points. The Findlay Oilers improved one spot from a year ago to claim the No. 3 spot in the standings at 151.1 points edging out the Tiffin Dragons (150.5) in fourth place who earned their highest finish as a GLIAC member institution.
The GVSU men compiled a total score of 98, outscoring second place Ashland by 18.5 points. The Lakers recorded four first place finishes in cross country, swimming & diving, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field.
On the women’s side, the GVSU Lakers captured seven first place finishes in cross country, soccer, volleyball, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field, lacrosse, and golf. The Lakers recorded 139 points, outdistancing Ashland by 40 points.
For the 10th consecutive year, Ashland University placed second in the standings. Ashland’s men scored 79.5 points while the women recorded 99 points. The Eagles captured their lone first place finish in baseball for the 2014-15 season.
The Tiffin University men finished third with a total of 77.5 points. The Dragons claimed a GLIAC championship in men's golf and men’s soccer, and second place finishes in wrestling and indoor track & field. On the women’s side, Wayne State University finished third with 93.5 points. The Warriors were champions in tennis, swimming & diving, and softball.
