Grand Valley State Leads Fall Learfield Sports Directors' Cup Standings

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Grand Valley State sits atop the 2015-16 Division II Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings following the completion of the fall sports season. The Lakers are looking to capture their 11th Division II Learfield Sports Directors' Cup and third straight title.

GVSU completed the fall campaign with 378 total points, scoring in all five fall sports and currently hold a 50-point advantage over Colorado School of Mines (328) in second, while Western Washington sits in third with a 239.50 point total.

The Lakers took home their third consecutive national title in women's soccer, while women's cross country finished runner-up at the national meet in Joplin. The Grand Valley State football team made an impressive postseason run on the road and finished in a tie for third, while the men's cross country squad earned a fourth-place showing in the championship race. The GVSU volleyball team also qualified for the NCAA Volleyball Tournament.

Ferris State currently sits 34th in the standings after postseason runs by the football and volleyball squads, while Hillsdale holds down the No. 40 spot after a third-place showing by the women's cross country team and a volleyball postseason appearance.

The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today.  Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 14 sports -- seven women’s and seven men’s.
