Grand Valley State Captures 13th Learfield Sports/IMG College Directors' Cup

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Grand Valley State captured its 13th Division II Learfield Directors’ Cup and marked the 18th consecutive year the Lakers have finished either first or second in the overall rankings. The Lakers were honored at the 2019 NACDA Convention during the Learfield Directors’ Cup Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, June 12. Overall, the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) landed six programs among the top 60.

The Lakers tallied 1,004 total points, scoring in 13 of 15 possible sports, led by pair of national championships by the men's and women’s cross country teams, and a runner up finish in women's soccer. The most recent semester featured a pair of third place finishes from the softball and women's outdoor track and field team. Other notable finishes for the Lakers include a pair of fourth place finishes from men's indoor and outdoor track & field, and fifth in men's swimming.

Ashland scored 583.50 points to finish 9th in the standings, while Wayne State ended up in 32nd position with a 405.50 point total. Ferris State recorded 323.50 points for a 51st place showing, two spots in front of No. 53 Saginaw Valley with 321 points. Northern Michigan rounded out the top 60 tallying 301.50, while Northwood and Michigan Tech finished outside the top 100 scoring 199.50 and 172.50 points respectively.

The Learfield Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 15 sports in Division II. Overall, you must count the following four sports – men’s basketball, baseball, women’s basketball and volleyball – along with the next highest 11 (max.) sports scored for each institution, regardless of gender.
