PAINESVILLE, OHIO – With the month of October designated as National Breast Cancer Awareness month, the Lake Erie College Department of Athletics will look to raise awareness and funds for cancer research at home contests throughout the month with its annual “Taking Breast Cancer by Storm” campaign.

Fans are encouraged to wear pink to games and will have the opportunity to buy limited edition “Taking Breast Cancer by Storm” t-shirts and wristbands at various home events between Oct. 7-16 as well as make donations to help the effort. All proceeds from the sales and all donations will go directly to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
The Storm volleyball, football, soccer, cross country and women’s tennis teams will all be participating in the cause.  The volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s tennis teams will wear special “Taking Breast Cancer by Storm” t-shirts during warm-ups of all their home games during that two week span, while the cross country team will wear their warm-up tops at the 2011 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championships on Oct. 22 at Ashland University.
The Lake Erie football team will wear special pink ribbon decals on their helmets for their Oct. 15 game at home against Grand Valley State University under the lights at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium.
“This is a great way for our student-athletes, coaches, staff, fans and the surrounding community to get involved in breast cancer awareness and show our support for a great cause,” said Lake Erie Assistant Athletic Director for Operations and Student Development and Senior Woman Administrator Lisa Liotta.
Local sporting goods retailer Sports-n-Sports is once again sponsoring the “Taking Breast Cancer by Storm” effort by providing the warm-up apparel for the teams.
In a more limited campaign the previous two years, “Taking Breast Cancer by Storm” has donated nearly $3,000 to breast cancer research as part of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s “Pink Wave.”  For more information, please visit: http://www.lakeeriestorm.com/sports/wbkb/2011-12/releases/201202102wjw9k
