Softball Claims 14-6 Win Over East Stroudsburg

Stanley and Foreman combine for seven RBI.

Salisbury, N.C.
-- The 20th-ranked Wayne State University softball team (5-2 overall) started the 2010 Catawba Invitational with a 14-6 win over East Stroudsburg in a game called after five innings.

After ESU scored three in the top of the first off Warrior starter Nicole Abel (Kitchener, Ont. / St. Mary's), the Wayne State bats erupted for five runs in the bottom of the frame.  Jaci Banton (Richmond Hill, Ont. / Cardinal Carter) had a one-out single preceding Rebecca Stanley's (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.) first home run of the campaign.  Brittany Omelanchuk (Brooklin, Ont. / Wilson S.S.) reached on an error and Becca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) followed with a single before Steph Foreman's (Cambridge, Ont. / Preston) RBI single plated Omelanchuk.  After a fielder's choice and a walk to Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy), Lauren Histed (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica) delivered a two-run single.

The ESU Warriors regained the lead in the top of the second on a pair of walks, a double and a sacrifice fly.

The WSU Warriors responded in the bottom of the inning with six runs on six hits with Foreman contributing a two-run double and Banton driving in two more runs with a two-out single.

Casey Hanes (Richmond, Va. / Douglas Freeman) came on in the top of the second to retire both batters she faced and then held ESU hitless over the next three innings, while the Wayne State bats finished with 14 runs on 14 hits along with three walks.

Steph LeClair (Kitchener, Ont. / Forest Heights C.I.) had an RBI double in the third, while Stanley and Omelanchuk had back-to-back RBI doubles in the fourth.

Both Banton and Stanley had three hits in the contest, while Omelanchuk, Foreman and LeClair each had two hits.  Stanley finished with four RBI, while Foreman drove in three runs.

Wayne State will play Armstrong Atlantic later today.
