DETROIT -- After being on the road the previous 10 matches including trips to Florida and Pennsylvania, the Wayne State University volleyball team (4-7) was ready to play in front of a home crowd at the Matthaei. WSU used that home-court advantage to sweep Ursuline (3-10) by scores of 25-23, 25-20 and 25-23.
HOW IT HAPPENED- Following a 6-0 run by the Arrows, the Warriors trailed 13-9 to begin the first set. WSU won the next four points to tie the set at 14-14 before the two teams traded points until kills from
Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) and
Emily Norscia (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Churchill) gave WSU a 19-17 lead. UC pulled within a point at 21-20, 22-21 and 24-23 but the Green & Gold were able to win the set 25-23 on an Ursuline attack error.
- WSU opened the second stanza by jumping out to a 7-2 lead and eventually led 16-7. Kills from
Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) and
Mikayla Shell (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) gave the home side a 20-11 lead. The Arrows went on a 4-1 run to trim WSU's lead to 21-15. The two teams traded points before UC went on a 3-0 run with WSU at 24 points to trim deficit to 24-20.
Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) delivered the set-winning kill on a perfect set from
Maddison Smith (Melbourne, Australia).
- The Warriors started fast again in the third set, leading 8-3 before an Ursuline timeout. The Arrows rallied and went on a 6-1 run to pull within two at 12-10. A kill from Frazee gave WSU a 16-13 lead and the Warriors won the race to 20 after an attack error by the Arrows. UC tied the match at 21-21 after a 3-0 run and forced head coach
Tim Koth to take a timeout and slow the rally. WSU led 22-21, 23-22, 24-23 and a UC attack error ended the match with WSU winning 25-23.
LEADING THE WARRIORS- Moore led WSU with 11 kills on 25 swings while
Michelle Asiedu (Holland, Ohio / Springfield) posted nine kills to go with her .667 hitting percentage.
- Smith dished out a season-high 38 assists while
Ellie Rodriguez (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) collected 10 digs.
LEADING THE ARROWS- Abbie Fabo posted a match-high 15 kills on 33 swings while Katelyn Selleny dished out 28 assists.
- Sabrina Kinney finished with 11 digs.
FROM COACH KOTH"It was great to get a win in our home opener. The crowd was loud and energetic and we needed it tonight. We were able to play everyone and we got contributions from the entire roster. I though Hannah (Moore) and Michelle (Asiedu) were fantastic."
