Volleyball Battles but Drops Crossover Finale

Wayne State returns to GLIAC play next weekend at Davenport.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (11-11 overall) was unable to salvage a win over Indianapolis (14-8 overall) to close out the 2018 Midwest Regional Crossover on Saturday.  The Warriors dropped their two matches on Friday before falling to UIndy in three sets.

The 11th annual Midwest Region Volleyball Crossover, the nation's largest collegiate volleyball tournament at one venue, will be held at The Academy Volleyball Club.  The two-day tournament features 57 matches conducted on 10 courts throughout six sessions at one of the top volleyball facilities in the country. The event is designed to increase competition between teams from the three leagues in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Greyhounds led 5-4 before a 3-0 Warriors run gave WSU a 7-5 lead.  Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore) and Olivia Fike (North Branch, Mich.) both tallied kills during the rally.  UIndy responded with a 6-0 run to lead 11-7 and eventually extended its advantage to 18-12.  A point from Fike trimmed WSU's deficit to 19-16 but the Greyhounds won five of the final six points to win the first set 25-18.

Wayne State started the second set by leading 7-3.  Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) collected two kills during a 6-0 run by the Green & Gold.  UIndy would come back and tie the set at 11-11.  The game remained tied at 17-17 and 22-22.  A 'Hounds service error and a kill from Richardson gave the Warriors a 24-22 lead.  After two points by UIndy, a kill by Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) made it 25-24 Warriors.  The Greyhounds won the final three points to take the set 27-25.

WSU trailed 9-2 to start the third set and eventually 15-5 as UIndy controlled the tempo of the game.  The margin grew to 11 at 20-9 as the Greyhounds secured the sweep with a 25-15 victory.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Richardson finished with a team-high eight kills, while Duffield tallied 25 assists.  Ellie Rodriguez (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) posted 12 digs.
