Strong Finish Propels Women's Basketball To 72-64 Road Win At Hillsdale

Brown tallies 32 points, 14 rebounds and three steals.

HILLSDALE, Mich. -- The eighth-ranked Wayne State University women's basketball squad outscored the host Hillsdale Chargers by nine points in the second half for a 72-64 road victory.  The Warriors improve to 10-1 overall and 6-1 in the GLIAC, while HC falls to 8-3 overall and 4-3 in league play.

In a back-and-forth opening 20 minutes, there were seven ties and five lead changes with the largest leads being five points by the Warriors on two occasions at 15-10 and 17-12.

Hillsdale had a 29-28 lead at halftime after shooting 41 percent (12-of-29) from the floor in the first half compared to 30 percent (10-of-33) for Wayne State.  Warrior senior center Shareta Brown (Pontiac, Mich. / Grand Blanc) had 16 points and eight boards before intermission.

HC's Kelsey Cromer drained a triple on the opening possession of the second half to give the Chargers a 32-28 advantage.  WSU responded with an 18-2 run over the next 6:30 to grab a 12 point lead at 46-34.  Both Brown and Ondrea Hughes (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Loy Norrix) totaled six points each during the spurt.

Wayne State's lead was still 11 (47-36) with 11:32 left, but the Chargers answered with a 13-2 run to take their final lead of the contest at 50-49 following a conventional three-point play by Megan Fogt.

A lay-up by junior guard Destiny Lavita-Stephens (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Goodrich) regained the lead for the Warriors and Brown followed with an offensive put back.  After Hillsdale's Morgan Blair sank a pair from the charity stripe to make it a one-point game (53-52) with 6:32 remaining, WSU went on a 6-0 run with Lavita-Stephens hitting a three-pointers and two foul shots along with Hughes splitting a pair from the foul line.

A 10-6 run by the Chargers cut the WSU advantage to three (65-62) with 1:48 left, but Lavita-Stephens scored down low to start a 7-0 Wayne State run.

The Warriors had 17 second half points off turnovers compared to zero for Hillsdale.

Brown finished the game with a 32 points, 14 rebounds, three steals, two assists and two blocked shots to pace Wayne State.  Lavita-Stephens contributed 15 points with senior guard Jackie Jones (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) chipping in with 10 points and three assists.

Cromer led Hillsdale with 20 points and eight rebounds.

Wayne State concludes play against the GLIAC North Division with a 5 p.m. tip on Saturday at Saginaw Valley State.
