Volleyball wins one of two on final day of Flyer Festival

The Malone University volleyball team finished their road trip to Lewis (IL) University on Saturday with a split after beating the University of Saint Francis (IL) in game one but suffering a setback to the host Lewis University Flyers in game two.

Malone picked up the win against Saint Francis in four sets 27-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-13. After trailing 21-24 in the first set, Malone rattled off four straight points to take the lead 25-24. Senior Heather Papp later delivered a service ace to seal the set 27-25. The Pioneers went on to win two out of the next three sets to capture the match.

Mallory Adams led the offensive attack with 15 kills. Elizabeth Maczuzak finished with 13 kills, 13 digs, 6 blocks and a team-high .524 attack percentage. Maggie Hamrock supplied a team-high 20 digs while defensive specialist Lynsey Trusty added 12 digs and 2 service aces. Setter Cathryn Miller dished out 39 assists. The Pioneers had a decisive advantage in attack percentage as they out hit the Saints .254 to .087.

In Saturday's second match, the Pioneers were swept in three sets 12-25, 20-25, 16-25 by the (6-1) Flyers.  Lewis out hit Malone .292 to .103 and held a commanding lead in team kills (41 kills to Malone's 24). Elizabeth Maczuzak topped the team with 7 kills. Mallory Adams added 6 kills while Sarah Brent chipped in with 5. Miller had a game-high 19 assists and a team-leading 8 digs.

In recognition of her strong play throughout the weekend, Adams was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Pioneers dropped to (3-5) on the young season. They will be back in action Tuesday September  15th at 7:00 pm when they welcome Cedarville.
