Women's Tennis Drops First of the Season

Sept. 10, 2010

DETROIT -- After posting a perfect 3-0 record during Labor Day Weekend, the Wayne State women's tennis team dropped its first match of the season Friday afternoon to Grand Valley State University, 7-2.

WSU fell behind early losing two of the three doubles matches to the Lakers.

In the Warriors lone win, the tandem of Sharon Gill and Kristina Goranskaya was able to keep their consecutive doubles win streak alive at 12, but not before climbing back from a deficit. After falling behind 3-0 to Chelsea Johnston and Darylann Trout in No. 1 doubles, Gill and Goranskaya were able to regain focus and outduel their counterparts 7-1 the rest of the way to win 8-4.

Milena Vuksanovic and McCall Monte did not fare as well as their teammates, but battled with Alyssa Lucas and Katelyn Schaffer before losing a tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-2) in No. 2 doubles.

Appearing in their first ever collegiate match, Caroline Gosman and Tanya Joseph were defeated by Lexi Rice and Niki Shipman in No. 3 doubles, 8-1.

In the singles portion, the Warriors were unable to swing the momentum in their favor.

Gill earned the only win ousting Tara Hayes, 6-4, 6-1 in No. 1 singles. She claimed her fourth straight win of the season and the 68th of her career.

Goranskaya took Shipman to three sets, but lost, 7-5, 2-6, 10-8.

Vuksanovic, Monte, Debora Correa and Jennifer Bradford all were defeated in straight sets.

Wayne State (3-1, 3-1 GLIAC) will look to bounce back Sunday against Ferris State at 11:00 a.m. at the WSU Tennis Courts.
