Volleyball Sweeps Saginaw Valley State

The Warriors are now 7-3 in the GLIAC, good for first place in the South Division.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (12-9, 7-3 GLIAC) returned to league action on Friday night inside the Matthaei and swept Saginaw Valley State (5-16, 3-7 GLIAC). The Warriors sit in first place in the South Division and have their sights set on a home GLIAC Tournament match as WSU finishes with four of their final six matches at home.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The visiting Cardinals sprinted out to a 7-3 lead to begin the first set.  A Michelle Asiedu (Holland, Ohio / Springfield) kill trimmed SVSU's lead to 13-12 later in the set but a WSU errors allowed the deficit to grow to 20-15.  SVSU led 23-19 before a 6-0 run capped by an ace from Ellie Rodriguez (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) gave the Green & Gold a 25-23 victory.

- SVSU led the second set 7-5 before the Warriors used a 7-0 run to take a 12-7 advantage.  Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) tallied a kill and gave WSU an 18-12 lead.  The Cards would storm back and take a 20-19 lead but Wayne State was up to the challenge, winning the six of the final seven points to take the game 25-21.

- The third set was tied at 10-10 before a kill from Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) broke the tie.  The momentum stayed with the home side as the Warriors extended their lead to 16-12, powered by kills from Moore and Richardson, plus an ace from Rodriguez.  The feisty SVSU squad would not go away and came back to take a 19-18 lead.  Once again, WSU finished a set strong and won 25-22.

CAREER MILESTONES
- Prior to the match, Rodriguez was honored for collecting her 1,000th dig last weekend against Rockhurst.  She was presented with a game ball form head coach Tim Koth.

- Moore needs one kill to reach the 1,000 kill plateau and already collected her 1,000th dig last weekend against McKendree.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Richardson led all performers with 14 kills, while Asiedu finished with 12.  Natalie Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) was excellent all night and dished out 33 assists.  Rodriguez collected 14 digs, while Breault notched 10.
