MIDLAND, Mich. -- In a win or go home situation on Friday afternoon, the Wayne State University baseball team (32-20) extended its season with a 4-2 victory over the 19th-ranked and second-seeded Southern Indiana Eagles (32-21) as play in the NCAA Midwest Regional continued. USI scored twice in the first inning but that would be all the offense for the Eagles as WSU scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to advance to Saturday's round of play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Starter
Jared Tobey (St. Clair, Mich.) (6-3) walked the first two batters of the game, which led to a sacrifice fly and an RBI single for USI's two early runs. Tobey settled in and the defense made the plays it needed to to stay in the game.
-
Justin Sherman (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) drew a leadoff walk in the fifth inning and
Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich.) followed with a single one batter later. RBI singles from
Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) and
Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) tied the game at 2-2 before
Devin Rose (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Orchard Lake St. Mary's) drove in the winning runs with a two-out, two-run single into center field.
- The Eagles were held hitless in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings as
Nolan Dill (Bowling Green, Ohio) was masterful on the mound in relief. Dill continued his domination in the ninth with a ground out and ended the game with back-to-back punch outs.
AT THE PLATE
- The top four hitters in the Warriors' lineup combined to go 9-for-16 with three runs scored and two RBI.
ON THE MOUND
- Tobey was effectively wild, walking seven and striking out five over six innings, allowing two earned runs. Dill struck out four batters and did not allow a base runner over the final three innings to collect his first save of the season.
