MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (7-7 overall) fell to No. 5 seed Saginaw Valley State (9-5 overall), 5-2, for a sixth-place finish in the 2016 GLIAC Tournament on Sunday morning at the Midland Community Tennis Center. The Warriors posted a 1-2 record in the tournament and tallied nine singles and doubles combined match wins over the three days.
DOUBLES RESULTS
- Seniors
Lauren Hughes (Detroit, Mich. / Southfield) and
Ashley Walker (Canton, Mich. / Salem) defeated Abby Shonk and Taylor McLaughlin, 8-5, at the third doubles flight, while sophomore
Dasha Kuznetsova (Moscow, Russia) and freshman
Julia Walz (Rastatt, Germany) posted an 8-6 victory over Izabella Ismailova and Danielle Slonac at No. 2 doubles.
- Sophomore
Liv Peisachovitz (Vaughan, Ont.) and junior
Liz Ghellere (Ararangua, Brazil) lost, 8-3, to Ana Pico Garcia and Shea Donahue at the first doubles position.
SINGLES RESULTS
- Peisachovitz fell in a three-set tiebreaker, 6-2 (6-1, 6-7(5) to Pico Garcia at the second singles flight, and Walz dropped two sets (6-2, 6-2) to Slonac at No. 4 singles.
- Walker garnered a two-set loss (6-0, 6-3) to Maddie Miller at the sixth singles position, while Hughes was beat y McLaughlin (6-1, 6-0) at the fifth singles flight.
ALL-GLIAC TEAMS
- Kuznetsova and Peisachovitz were named to the All-GLIAC Second Team, and Ghellere earned All-GLIAC Honorable Mention accolades after the tournament.
UP NEXT
- The Warriors concluded the fall season with a 7-7 overall record and 6-5 in the GLIAC. Wayne State will begin its spring season in early March.
