Women's Basketball Earns 74-60 Victory Over Northwood

The Warriors have won six out of their last seven games

DETROIT -- The Wayne State women's basketball team improved to 6-2 in the GLIAC (8-4 overall) with a 74-60 victory Thursday over Northwood (7-8, 5-4 GLIAC) at the Matthaei. The victory is WSU's sixth in its last seven contests.

Talisha Bridges (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Loy Norrix) scored a game-high 20 points, her eighth straight game scoring in double figures, to lead the Warriors. Phaebre Colbert (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Northern) notched a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Brittany Streetman (Warren, Mich. / Lincoln) scored a career-high 18 points for WSU. Streetman was 3-of-5 from three-point range and made 7-of-11 shots overall.

The Warriors nearly led from the get-go Thursday. Northwood scored the first bucket of the game as Gabrielle Rivette converted on a lay-up, but Wayne State would go on to score the next 11 points to take an 11-2 lead with 15:31 remaining in the first half. Streetman scored five of WSU's first 11 points.

WSU built the lead to 13 points after a Colbert lay-up gave the Warriors a 16-3 lead with 13:30 left in the first. It was the largest lead of the first half for Wayne State. The Timberwolves got the lead down to seven points three times in the first frame, but would get no closer. Rachel Church's three-pointer with four seconds remaining in the first half cut the WSU lead to 31-24 at halftime.

At the half, Streetman had 12 points, including sinking 3-of-3 from long range.

Wayne State went on a scoring run to start the second half, scoring the first nine points of the half to extend the lead to 40-24. Kayla Bridges (Canton, Mich.) scored four of the points during the 9-0 run. She finished the contest with nine points and six rebounds.

The Warriors maintained a 12-point lead throughout the remainder of the contest. WSU's biggest lead was 20 points, coming with 6:02 left in the game on Colbert's free throw.

Wayne State held a large rebound advantage over the Timberwolves, 55-33. WSU had 22 offensive rebounds. The Warriors also shot 43.1 percent (25-for-58), while NU shot just 31.0 percent (18-for-58) from the floor during the contest.

Church led Northwood with 15 points. Lauren Robak added 11 points and Aleigha Wylie posted 10 points for the Timberwolves.
