Volleyball Sweeps on Senior Day

Wayne State won in straight sets over Lake Superior State on Saturday afternoon.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (8-12, 5-8 GLIAC) sent its three seniors (Jamie Goryca, Carlee Hunt and Hannah Williams) out with a win in their final home game. The Warriors swept Lake Superior State (2-19, 1-12 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon by scores of 25-16, 25-10 and 25-19 inside the Matthaei.

Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) led a balanced offensive attack with eight kills, hitting .500 for the match. Ellen Oppenheim (St. Joseph, Mich.) and Heather Weiss (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron) both tallied seven kills. Madison Reeves (Indianapolis, Ind.) dished out 35 assists while Carlee Hunt (Waterford, Mich. / Walled Lake Northern) aided the defense with eight digs.

The Warriors hit .398 compared to Lake Superior State's .063 hitting percentage.

WSU opened up the first set leading 9-2 and extended its lead to 19-9 on a kill from Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian). The Lakers mounted a mini comeback and trailed 24-16 before a LSSU service error closed out the set.

The momentum continued into the second set as WSU cruised to a 20-8 lead before closing out the set 25-10.

The third and final set was more competitive. LSSU led 13-12 on a kill from Sydne McMullen. However, WSU would regain its form and the lead 19-15. The Warriors won five of the last six points to finish the sweep with a 25-19 set three victory.

The Green & Gold will look to continue its winning streak on the road as the rest of the regular season will be played entirely on the road. Starting that five-match road trip will be midweek match at Saginaw Valley State on Tuesday at 7 PM.
