DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (9-8 overall, 7-5 GLIAC) cruised past Davenport (9-11 overall, 3-9 GLIAC) 71-56 on Saturday afternoon to end a three-game losing streak. The Warriors were strong at the charity stripe, going 23-of-26 and only turned the ball over nine times as they moved into fifth place in the GLIAC standings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The visiting Panthers started the game leading 6-2 forcing head coach
David Greer to burn an early timeout at the 18:03 mark. A conventional three-point play from
George Spencer (Detroit, Mich. / Belleville) tied the game at 8-8 with 15:25 left in the opening half. Two free throws from Spencer pushed WSU's lead to four, 15-11, at the 7:51 mark. Spencer continued to carry the load offensively for the Green & Gold, scoring six consecutive points to give the home team a 24-18 advantage with five minutes left to play. Davenport chipped away at the home lead and trailed 26-24 at the 2:56 mark but Wayne State ended the stanza on a 6-1 run, capped by a three-point buzzer-beater from
Ronald Booth (Detroit, Mich. / Consortium), giving the Warriors a 32-25 lead at intermission.
- WSU began the second half with a quick four points to push its lead to 36-25 at the 17:59 mark. A fast break bucket from Booth and a nifty pass from
Marcus Moore (Lansing, Mich. / Waverly) found
Chuck Key (Detroit, Mich. / Cass Tech) extending the Warriors advantage to 40-28 with 16:10 remaining. Davenport pulled within single digits, 44-35, at the 13:17 mark on a layup from Janeau Joubert.
Darian Owens-White (Ypsilanti, Mich. / River Rouge) connected from deep to keep WSU up by double-digits, 52-41, with 7:23 left to play. A three-point play from DU's Robbie Bramhill cut the home lead to 56-47 but that would be as close as the Panthers would come down the stretch and WSU would go on to win 71-56.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Spencer matched his career-high with 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Booth finished with 17 points. Moore tallied 12 points and
Latin Davis, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Milan) collected a career-best 11 boards.
LEADING THE PANTHERS
- Delano Smith led DU with 12 points, while Joubert chipped in with 10 points.
