HAMMOND, Ind. – The Wayne State University women's tennis team wrapped up its fall regular season with a win Sunday morning, as the Warriors improved to 8-2 overall and in the GLIAC with an 8-1 win over Purdue Northwest (5-10 overall, 0-10 GLIAC).
Senior
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino), junior
Dasha Kuznetsova (Moscow, Russia), senior
Liz Ghellere (Ararangua, Brazil) and freshmen
Linda Liong (Tanjung Kidurong, Malaysia) and
Irena van Meer (Amsterdam, Netherlands) all won both matches for Wayne State.
RESULTS
-Mitrache paired with freshman
Khadija Da-Silva (Burlington, Ont. / Robert Bateman S.S.) at No. 2 doubles and earned the first win with an 8-6 victory over Carolina Yepez and Cynthia Basu-Chavez.
-Liong and van Meer played the third doubles flight, taking the second point with an 8-1 win over Anna Wachowski and Selina Baez.
-At No. 1 doubles, Kuznetsova and Ghellere won 8-6 over Brooke Foltz and Lena van Bergen to take the third doubles point.
-Liong earned the first singles win, defeating Basu-Chavez 6-0, 6-0. That win was followed by van Meer's win, a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Wachowski in fifth set, and Kuznetsov's 6-1, 6-0 win over Foltz in the second set.
-Ghellere earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Yepez in the third flight before the Pride earned its lone point. At No. 6, Abby Kvachkoff defeated junior
Astrid Ciellza (Tecumseh, Ont. / St. Ane's S.S.), 6-3, 1-6, 10-6. The Warriors then finished the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win for Mitrache over van Bergen.
UP NEXT
The Warriors will travel to Midland starting next Friday for the three-day GLIAC Tournament, which will continue Saturday and conclude Sunday.
