DETROIT -- In the final non-conference game of the season, the Wayne State University men's basketball program (5-4 Overall) topped Michigan-Dearborn (10-5 Overall) 74-67 on Tuesday night.
Ronald Booth (Detroit, Mich. / Consortium) matched a career-high with 29 points to help lead the Warriors past a solid UM-Dearborn squad.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Michigan-Dearborn started fast, leading 9-2 at the 17:34 mark, forcing head coach
David Greer to take an early timeout. A triple from Booth cut the deficit to five at 16-11 with 15:13 left before halftime. A turnaround jumper from
Chuck Key (Detroit, Mich. / Cass Tech) tied the game 16-16 at the 11:40 mark. Two free throws from
Marcus Moore (Lansing, Mich. / Waverly) gave the Warriors their first lead of the night, 27-25 with seven minutes to play in opening stanza. WSU would lead the rest of the half and entered the locker rooms with a 37-31 lead thanks to two late buckets from
George Spencer (Detroit, Mich. / Belleville).
- The Wolverines cut WSU's lead to two, 37-35, at the 17:56 mark scoring the first four points of the second half. UM-Dearborn tied the game at 39-39 before an alley-oop to
Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) sparked the Green & Gold and the crowd. However, the Wolverines would lead 44-41 and 46-43 before WSU started to find its footing. Key began to find space on the baseline against the zone defense and connected on a jumper with 12 minutes to play, putting the Warriors up 50-46. Another Key 15-footer pushed the home advantage to double-digits at 56-46. Booth hit from long range for the fifth time at the 8:06 mark, pushing the lead to 64-48. An 11-0 run by the Wolverines trimmed the advantage to 66-61 with just under fine minutes remaining. A layup by Ashton Curd brought UM-Dearborn within three , 68-65, with three minutes left to play but WSU would regain control connecting on four late free throws to secure the seven-point victory.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Booth's 29 points were aided by 13 from Spencer and 12 from Key. Spencer notched his first career double-double, pulling down 10 rebounds. Moore tied his career-high with nine assists. As a team, the Warriors made 13 three-pointers on 20 attempts (65 percent), which is a season-best.
LEADING THE WOLVERINES
- Jason Penn led UM-Dearborn with 15 points and 12 boards, while Cody Kegley contributed 14 points.
