Baseball Wins on Squeeze in the 15th Inning

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- As play in the RussMatt Invitational continued, the Wayne State university baseball team (3-0 overall) met Thomas (4-15 overall) on Thursday and the Warriors won a wild and exciting contest 9-8.  The five-hour marathon ended on a squeeze in the bottom of the 15th inning.  It was the longest game since a 14-inning win over Trevecca Nazarene on Feb. 17, 2017.

HOW IT HAPPENED
WSU scored twice in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly from redshirt junior Chris Tanderys (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) and an RBI single by junior Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.).  The Night Hawks scratched one across in the top of the second inning with the help of a WSU fielding error and took a 3-2 lead with a pair of runs on three hits in the top of the third inning.  A Ramirez triple plus an error allowed Ramirez to score in the bottom of the third inning.

Thomas answered with five runs on five hits in the top of the fourth inning to take an 8-4 lead.  Redshirt junior Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) sparked the Warriors' comeback in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two-run home run, his first collegiate long ball.  Foley connected for a leadoff double in the bottom of the ninth inning and redshirt junior Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) followed with an RBI double.  With two outs, junior Davis Graham (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) was called off the bench and delivered a game-tying RBI single.

Once again, Foley set the table and he singled to begin the bottom of the 15th inning.  After a walk to senior Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.), DeLanoy singled to load the bases.  Freshman CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS) executed a perfect squeeze bunt to plate the game-winning run.

AT THE PLATE
Foley finished 5-for-8 with three runs and two RBI, while DeLanoy went 4-for-7 with an RBI and two runs scored.  Finkbeiner and Ramirez both tallied three hits, while redshirt junior CJ Drogosch (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) went 2-for-3 off the bench.

ON THE MOUND
In his WSU debut, junior Ryan Korolden (Yale, Mich.) worked a scoreless first inning and struck out the side.  Redshirt sophomore Joey Muzljakovich (Mayfield, Mich. / Traverse City St. Francis) tossed the next two innings and allowed five earned runs on four hits and four walks.  Redshirt senior Dustin Renfroe (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Brother Rice / U of D Jesuit) allowed three earned runs in his inning of work before senior Nicholas O'Dea (Livonia, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) hung a zero during the fifth inning.  Perhaps the player of the game, was junior Chad Sommers (Jonesville, Mich.) who worked six innings of relief and did not allow a run on four hits, while striking out six batters.   Redshirt senior Jack Schmidt (Fishers, Ind. / Indianapolis Cathedral) also was solid out of the bullpen, striking out five batters in three scoreless innings. Redshirt senior Brendan Bilkovic (West Bloomfield, Mich.) (1-0) earned the win by working a scoreless 15th inning and recording two strikeouts.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will make the short trip over to Lakeland and play Southeastern at 11:00 AM.
