ALLENDALE, Mich. –
Kira Dosenberry and
Sarah Lowe led the way as top-seed Grand Valley State cruised past fifth-seed McKendree, 18-4, in the semifinal of the 2015 GLIAC Tournament at GVSU Lacrosse/Track & Field Stadium.
Dosenberry led all scorers in the game with four goals, the most for her in a single game in her GVSU career, while Lowe tallied seven points off two goals and five assists as the Lakers rolled to their 11th consecutive victory and 14th win of the season.
Ryan Skomial added a goal and an assist while pulling down a game best nine draw controls, tying her for second in the record books for most in a single game. The win is also historic in that it's the 50th win for the Grand Valley State program in four years of Division II competition.
On defense, the Lakers shut out the Bearcats (11-7) in the first half while limiting them to just 16 shots all night. Led by
Alyssa Neumen and
Caitlin Wojichowski, the defense caused 18 of McKendree's 20 turnovers.
Sarah Zwilsky continued her outstanding sophomore campaign, making nine saves in all 60 minutes of action.
Unlike the last time these teams met, Grand Valley State had to wait over two minutes to put the game's first goal in the back of the net. From the opening goal it was all GVSU as they jumped out to a quick three goal lead off the sticks of Lowe,
Brooke Ingraham and
Erika Neumen.
Jordan Luberto assisted on a man-up goal by Neumen while
Zoe Stiemann found the back of the net off a dish by
Victoria Devine 12 seconds later to make the score 5-0 with half of the opening stanza still to play.
Meghan Datema tickeld the twine at 7:51, and the Lakers ended the first half with three goals off passes by Lowe to
Carolyn Kraus, Skomial and
Rachel Leibovitz to put Grand Valley State up 9-0 going into the break at the half.
McKendree finally snuck a pair of shots past Zwilsky to make it a 9-2 score, but Dosenberry ripped all four of her goals, including three straight and one in a player-advantage situation to put GVSU up by 12. Two more tallies by Devine gave the Lakers a 16-4 lead, and goals by Lowe and
Ashley Bailey closed out the game.
The Lakers will now face second-seeded Tiffin in Sunday's (May 3) GLIAC Tournament Championship game for the third time since the GLIAC began sponsoring women's lacrosse in 2013. Tiffin advanced to the championship game after dispatching fifth-seeded Findlay, 26-13, earlier in the afternoon.
