Men's Tennis Snaps Four-Match Losing Skid With 4-3 Victory Over Findlay

The Warriors improved to 5-0 on home court with the win on Friday.

DETROIT -- The No. 20-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (7-8 overall) returned home to Detroit on a snowy Friday afternoon and snapped a four-match losing streak with a 4-3 triumph over the University of Findlay (4-8 overall) inside the Duchene Athletic Facility.

WSU won for the fifth time on home court to remain spotless in that category for the season.  The Warriors also improved to 4-2 within the Midwest Region.

DOUBLES
The Green and Gold secured the doubles point for the first time in five matches to lead 1-0 in the early portion of the regional battle.

The No. 12-ranked tandem of Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and Dom Spicer (London, England) made quick work of UF's Andrew Codita and Clement Andrieu, as they recorded a 6-0 shutout at the second flight.

Findlay claimed the next completed affair at the No. 3 spot, with Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) and Emil Mikkelsen (Soenderborg, Denmark) falling 6-4 to Luigi Bove and Ethan Shoesmith.

No. 1 doubles was the deciding factor, and Wayne State's dynamic duo of Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) emerged victorious in a tiebreaker.  The squad's sixth-ranked pairing in Division II downed Arthur Bord and Dallas Ramsey 7-6 (7-3) to grab the first point on Friday.

SINGLES
WSU and UF split the six singles contests, but the Warriors used their early advantage to remain ahead for the duration of the affair.

Drenth, ranked No. 13 in singles for the country, handled Bove with back-to-back 6-2 set scores at the No. 2 spot to be the first completed match.

The Oilers tallied the next two matches, with Andrieu defeating Spicer 6-4, 6-3 at the third flight and Bove dropping the No. 11-ranked Grey by scores of 7-6 (7-1) and 6-3 at the first flight.

With the match deadlocked at 2-2, Wayne State persevered and won the next two contests to secure the required four points needed for a triumph.  Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield Township, Mich. / Walled Lake Central (United States Air Force Academy)) collected a strong 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 win over Codita at the No. 4 position, while Mikkelsen beat Maneo Gaborin 6-1, 7-5 at the sixth flight.  Mikkelsen's victory served as the match-clincher for the Green and Gold.

In the final match-up of the afternoon, Hill suffered a heartbreaking three-match setback after an opening 7-6 (7-5) win in the first set vs. Ramsey.  The Oilers player registered triumphs of 6-4 and 12-10 in a 10-point super tiebreaker to give Findlay three points on the scoreboard.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will host another Midwest Region foe in Tiffin University on Tuesday, March 26, inside the Duchene Athletic Facility.  First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m. between the No. 20-ranked Warriors and No. 38-ranked Dragons.
