Baseball Starts Florida Trip with 11-5 Win Over Winona State

A pair of three-run blasts in the seventh inning propelled the Warriors to victory.

LEESBURG, Fla. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (8-2 overall) started its Spring Break trip in Florida with a comeback 11-5 victory over Winona State (6-7 overall).  The game was first of seven scheduled in the Orlando area over the next week.

The victory gives head coach Ryan Kelley 350 overall wins at Wayne State.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Winona State scored runs in the bottom of the fourth and bottom of the fifth innings to lead 2-0.  Junior Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) and sophomore Davis Graham (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) both connected for three-run home runs in the top of the seventh inning to give Wayne State a 6-2 advantage.

The Green & Gold's lead was cut to three, 6-3, after a run in the bottom of the seventh inning but an RBI double from MacLean in the eighth inning pushed the visitor's lead back to four, 7-3.

Winona State scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull within two, 7-5.  However, the GLIAC version of the Warriors responded with four runs on three hits and two walks in the top of the ninth inning.  Graham had an RBI double, while redshirt sophomore Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) also notched an RBI double and redshirt sophomore Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) posted a two-run double during the frame.

AT THE PLATE
Graham went 3-for-5 with four RBI and scored two runs, while redshirt Jacob Raymond (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) finished 3-for-5.  Foley and MacLean both collected two hits, while MacLean drove in four runs.

ON THE MOUND
Redshirt senior Dillon McInerney (Richmond, Mich.) (4-0) remained perfect this season by earning his fourth win in his fourth start.  He allowed two runs (one earned) in six innings and struck out four batters.  Redshirt junior Jack Schmidt (Fishers, Ind. / Indianapolis Cathedral) worked an inning and 2/3 and struck out three batters before senior Josh Nelson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) pitched the final inning and a 1/3 and did not allow a run.
