Volleyball Tops Northwood, 3-1

Emily Norscia led the Warriors with 18 kills and a .350 hitting percentage.

DETROIT -- After dropping the opening set on Friday night, the Wayne State University volleyball team (7-12, 4-8 GLIAC) took the next three by scores of 26-24, 25-20 and 26-24 to defeat Northwood (6-13, 3-9 GLIAC) 3-1 inside the Matthaei.

Emily Norscia (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Churchill) continued her excellent play, leading the way for WSU with 18 kills and a .350 hitting percentage. Also posting double-digit kills were Heather Weiss (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron) with 12 and Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) with 11. In addition, Moore collected her team-leading seventh double-double of the season with 11 digs.

Madison Reeves (Indianapolis, Ind.) finished with 37 assists while Madison Kielty (Plymouth, Mich. / Canton) helped the defense with 16 digs.

Northwood took the first set 25-19 after being tied with the Warriors 10-10. The Timberwolves would then pull away extending their lead to 18-13 and eventually 25-19.

NU led the second set 21-20 before the Warriors took six of the last nine points to steal the game, 26-24.

The Green & Gold controlled the third set, leading 17-10 on a kill from Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) and would cruise to a 25-20 victory. Northwood would only come as close as two points down the stretch.

However, the T-Wolves would not go away without a fight. WSU led 15-9 midway through the fourth set but Northwood would storm back to tie the set at  17-17 and take an 18-17 lead on the next point. Head coach Tim Koth took his second and final timeout to slow the NU momentum. The visitors extended their lead to 21-18 before WSU ended the set (and match) on an 8-3 run to win the game 26-24.

The Warriors are back in action on Saturday at 4 PM against Lake Superior State (2-18, 1-11 GLIAC). The three WSU seniors (Jamie Goryca, Carlee Hunt and Hannah Williams will be honored prior to the match.
