Oilers Weather 1st Half Storm, Beat Lake Erie
The University of Findlay women's basketball team overcame a 16-point first half deficit to claim a 66-58 win over Lake Erie College on Jan. 24 in Painesville, Ohio. The victory gives the Oilers a 10-6 record on the season with a 6-6 mark in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.
The Oilers got off to a slow start as the Storm jumped out to a 21-5 lead in the first ten minutes of the half. Findlay then went on a 19-7 run to close the half as they entered the break trailing by a score of 28-24.
Lake Erie began the second half with a small 4-0 run to make the score 32-24, but the Oilers took control from there as they eventually built a 14-point lead before holding off the Storm down the stretch.
The Oilers shot 48.8 percent (21-of-43) from the floor and forced 21 turnovers in the game. They also held the Storm to a 39.7 percent (23-of-58) shooting clip in the win.
Sophomore guard Karli Bonar led the way with 17 points to go along with three rebounds and two steals. She hit 5-of-12 shot attempts and connected on 5-of-10 three point tries.
Senior guard Ciara Geiger also reached double figures with 14 points and stuffed the stat sheet with five rebounds, four steals, three assists and a block in the game.
Senior guard Kristin Klausing chipped in nine points, four rebounds and four assists while junior forward Margaret Wuebker, freshman guard Shannon Zajec and junior forward Kelsey Lewis had five points apiece.
Kayla Gabor led the Storm with 14 points, but turned the ball over eight times.
The Oilers will return to the hardwood on Jan. 29 when they travel to Canton, Ohio to face Walsh University at 5:30 p.m.
