Box Score

The Malone University baseball team fell on the road to Ohio Dominican University on Wednesday afternoon by a final score of 10-2.  The Panthers jumped out an early 4-0 lead and then plated three runs in the seventh and three runs in the eighth to put the contest out of reach.

ODU, which had split a doubleheader with the Pioneers at Thurman Munson Stadium last week, captured the season series with Wednesday's victory, improving to 20-15 overall and 10-10 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).  Malone, meanwhile, slipped to 15-21 overall and 10-11 in conference games.

The Panthers brought home solo runs in the second and third innings and two runs in the fourth to grab the early advantage.  The Pioneers trimmed the deficit to 4-1 in the top of the sixth with a sacrifice fly off the bat of rightfielder Matt Wheeler, but that was as close as the visitors would get.

Three base hits and a Pioneer error allowed ODU to stretch the lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the seventh.  Ohio Dominican then put the game away with another three-run outburst in the bottom of the eighth.

Malone 's second run came in the top of the eighth as first baseman Logan Gray led off the frame with a double, moved to third on a single by catcher Matt Davis and then trotted home when the Panthers were called for a balk.

The two squads combined for 24 hits in the contest, Malone with 11 and ODU 13..  Second baseman Austin Pachan paced the Pioneer offense from the lead-off spot, going 3-for-5.  Gray and leftfielder Hayden Mobley also had productive afternoons, each adding a pair of hits.

The Pioneers will be back in action on Friday and Saturday with a three-game series at Ashland University.  The two teams are slated to play a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader on Friday before wrapping up the series with a nine-inning game on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
