Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader to End Florida Trip

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (12-5) finished its Florida trip with two wins over Southwest Baptist (5-16) on Saturday.  The Warriors took game one 5-1 before closing out Spring Break with a 7-4 victory.

GAME ONE (W, 5-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED

WSU took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.  Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) drove in two runs with a single into right field. 

The Bearcats loaded the bases in the top of the fifth inning but a Karter Fitzpatrick (Monroe, Mich. / Carleton Airport) (3-0) strikeout allowed WSU to escape without giving any any runs.

Logan Tobel (Brighton, Mich. / Hartland) smacked his second home run of the season out to center field, giving the Warriors a 3-0 advantage in the bottom of the fifth inning.  SBU used two hits in the top of the sixth inning to trim the Wayne State lead to 3-1.

DeLanoy added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning with a home run to right field.  A sacrifice fly from Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) made it 5-1.

AT THE PLATE
Tobel and DeLanoy both had two hits, while DeLanoy led the offense with three RBI.

ON THE MOUND
Fitzpatrick had eight strikeouts in six innings and allowed one run on eight hits and no walks.  Chad Sommers (Jonesville, Mich.) finished the game with a perfect inning of relief.

GAME TWO (W, 7-4)
HOW IT HAPPENED

The Green & Gold lineup flexed its muscle early in the top of the first inning with three runs on two hits and an error.  An error allowed the first run of the game to score before Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) blasted a two-run home run over the wall in left field to make it 3-0.

The Warriors added three more runs in the top of the third inning.  MacLean singled home a run before Tobel collected an RBI single and Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) pushed WSU ahead 6-0 with an RBI single into right field.

The Bearcats posted a run in the third and three runs in the fourth to trim their deficit to two, 6-4.

Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) drove in a pair of runs with a double in the fifth inning.

AT THE PLATE
MacLean powered the offense by going 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored.  Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) and Tanderys each had two hits.

ON THE MOUND
Kaden Stively (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) started and was effective in his two innings of work.  He did not allow a run and struck out three batters.  Ryan Korolden (Yale, Mich.) was the first out of the bullpen and allowed a run in one inning on a hit and two walks.  Jimmy Love (Birmingham, Mich. / Seaholm) and Griffin Kilander (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) both appeared in fourth inning allowing three runs combined.

Joey Muzljakovich (Mayfield, Mich. / Traverse City St. Francis) (1-0) was solid in his two innings of action, not allowing a run.  Jacob Raymond (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) worked 2/3 of an inning and did not allow a run, while striking out two.  Ryan Szlachcic (Jenison, Mich. / Hudsonville) was the seventh and final hurler to be used and he collected the final two outs.

UP NEXT
The Green & Gold will play a single nine-inning contest at Findlay on Tuesday with first pitch set for 3:00 p.m. at Marathon Diamonds.
