Baseball Suffers Opening Round Loss to Walsh

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball program (35-18) controlled much of the opening round game vs. Walsh (31-21) on Thursday in the NCAA Midwest Regional.  However a five-run eighth inning propelled the Cavilers to an upset of the Warriors.  WSU is hosting the an NCAA regional at Harwell Field for the first time in program history.  Wayne State is the second seed, while Walsh is seeded seventh.  The Warriors are playing in the NCAA postseason for the ninth time in program history and seventh under head coach Ryan Kelley.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Wayne State scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Brett Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) started the frame with a single into center field before Logan Tobel (Brighton, Mich. / Hartland) nearly homered to right field but was robbed of the two-run shot.  A triple from Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) and error on the same play allowed both runners to score.

The Cavs got on the board with a solo home rum by Jarrett Lyon in the top of the fourth inning.

Both teams were scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning when the Green & Gold used a Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) double and Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich.) RBI single to make it 3-1.

The top of the eighth inning started with three consecutive doubles just past the outstretched glove of first baseman Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School).  Those three hits tied the game at 3-3 before a sacrifice fly and two-run home run gave Walsh a 6-3 advantage.

A double play in the bottom of the eighth slowed a possible rally and a single in the bottom of the ninth by MacLean would be all of the offense for WSU.

AT THE PLATE
Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) went 2-for-4, while Finkbeiner also turned in two hits.

ON THE MOUND
Ryan Korolden (Yale, Mich.) was solid, going seven innings allowing three runs on six hits and struck out a career-best 12 batters.  Chad Sommers (Jonesville, Mich.) (3-2) suffered the loss after allowing the go-ahead runs.  He was touched for three runs in 1/3 of an inning before Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) worked an inning and 2/3 of scoreless relief with three punch outs.

UP NEXT
The Green & Gold will meet Ashland at 11:00 a.m. in an elimination game.  The Eagles will be the home time.  Illinois-Springfield and Walsh will play the second game of the day around 2:30 p.m.
