Women's Tennis Defeats Saginaw Valley State in GLIAC Opener

The Warriors won their 10th official match of the season on Friday.

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (10-5 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) opened conference action on Friday afternoon with a 5-2 victory over Saginaw Valley State (6-7 overall, 2-1 GLIAC) inside the Greater Midland Tennis Center.

The Greater Midland Tennis Center will also serve as the location of the GLIAC Tournament for another season beginning on April 26.

WSU's official record following Friday's contest is 10-5.  Two matches against Lawrence Tech and Northwestern Ohio, both Warrior victories, were officially deemed exhibition matches and thus not included in the overall total for this campaign.

DOUBLES
The Green and Gold won all three singles matches to earn the first point of the match.

All three scores were relatively identical, with a pair of 6-2 scores and a 6-3 decision.

Wayne State's eighth-ranked team of Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) faced the No. 41-ranked tandem of Adriana Barrio and Tara Erler - a match the Warrior duo won 6-2 at the first flight.

The other 6-2 final was at the No. 3 position courtesy of Shanice Weekes (London, England) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia).  They downed SVSU's Johanna Michahelles and Lydia Liong.

At the No. 2 position, Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) triumphed 6-3 over Amelia Dickson and Elizabeth Stuart.

SINGLES
WSU tallied four of six singles matches to claim its first league victory of the spring campaign.

Ruyssen, the No. 17-ranked player in Division II, posted set wins of 6-2 and 6-3 against Barrio at the first flight.

At the No. 2 spot, Arafat dropped the second set 6-3 to Erler, but earned the other two via 6-2 and 6-3 decisions to garner another point on the scoreboard.

Szpakowska put in a perfect effort vs. Calli Sokolowski at the fourth flight.  The sophomore notched two triumphs of 6-0 for the spotless performance.

Weekes nearly shut out Liong at the No. 6 position, but nonetheless had victories of 6-1 and 6-0 to secure the win.

Winning the second set 6-1 at the third flight was Komar, but the No. 52-ranked player lost the other sets 6-4, 6-3 to Michahelles.

Gorgidze collected an opening set triumph of 6-1 at the No. 5 spot, but the Cardinals' Dickson won 6-4 and 6-3 in the other two sets.
