Softball Posts Two Victories on Saturday; Extends Win Streak to Seven Games

The Warriors allowed just three hits in the two games on Saturday.

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (11-2 overall) won its first two games of a 14-game Spring Break trip in Florida on Saturday afternoon.  WSU topped Pittsburgh-Johnstown, 8-1, and Nova Southeastern, 6-2, to extend its winning streak to seven games. 

GAME ONE RECAP
The Warriors took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on four hits from junior Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont. / Centennial C.V.I.), senior Shelby Spano (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson), freshman Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont. / St. Anne Catholic) and sophomore Kylee Barrett (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington).  Butler scored off Spano's single, then Barrett tripled to score Spano and McClounie.

Senior Jade McGarr (Guelph, Ont. / St. James Catholic) extended WSU's lead to 4-0 in the top of the third with a leadoff homerun to left center.  Barrett and senior Ali Lince (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview) later scored off of senior Shannon Hilton's (Gilford, Ont. / Bradford) double.  The Warriors led 6-0 after the third inning. 

The Mountain Cats held Wayne State to no runs in the fourth and fifth innings.  Pittsburgh-Johnstown's McKenna Kern scored off an error late in the fifth. 

WSU sealed the victory after freshman Jamie MacNeil (Brampton, Ont. / St. Thomas Aquinas S.S.) laced a double into left field scoring freshman Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) and junior Allie Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont. / Galt C.I.). 

IN THE CIRCLE 
Butler improved to 7-1 by allowing just one hit in four innings of work with 11 strikeouts to one walk.  

Guitar relieved Butler in the fifth inning.  She struck out four batters and walked three, while allowing one unearned run. 

Pittsburgh-Johnstown's Emma Moore surrendered seven earned runs on 13 hits in six innings. She struck out two and did not walk a batter. 

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Butler went 3-for-3 at the plate, while Buchanan and Spano each had two hits. 

LEADING THE OPPOSITION
Ashley Shor had the lone hit for the Mountain Cats.

GAME TWO RECAP
WSU trailed Nova Southeastern, 1-0, after the first inning when Dakota Villella hit a leadoff double then scored off a Katey Blummer single. 

Wayne State sparked its offense with four hits in the top of the third.  Butler singled adn Buchanan reached on an error with both runners scoring off a triple from McGarr, who later scored on a RBI groundout by junior Emily Cava (Brampton, Ont. / Cardinal Leger S.S.).  McClounie drilled a single to right field than and scored on a triple from Guitar. 

NSU's Ashley Roe hit a triple to left center in the bottom of the third.  She scored off another Blummer single. 

The Warriors added two insurance runs in the fifth as Cava had a leadoff single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from McClounie.  Barrett had a two-out single plating Cava.  Barrett scored off Hilton's single to right center. 

IN THE CIRCLE 
Senior Mackenzie Boehler (Saginaw, Mich. / Swan Valley) gave up seven hits and two earned runs in seven innings.  She struck out nine batters to zero walks. 

Nova Southeastern's Erica Winter allowed six runs on 12 hits in the full seven innings.  She had two strikeouts and two walks. 

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Barrett, Lince and McClounie each had two hits as part of Wayne State's 12-hit attack. 

LEADING THE OPPOSITION
Blummer, Roe and Villella each had two hits for the Sharks.

WSU will compete against Mercy College (9 a.m.) and Bemidji State (1 p.m.) on Sunday in Clermont, Fla.
