Men's Basketball Hangs On to Win at Northwood

The Warriors used a late layup to go up by one.

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (8-16 overall, 7-12 GLIAC) won 77-76 at Northwood (11-16 overall, 8-11 GLIAC) on Saturday night.  The Warriors avenged a three-point loss inside the Matthaei on Jan. 17th, while collecting their first league road win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Five quick points for the Timberwolves forced head coach David Greer to take an early timeout.  The Warriors trimmed the home advantage to 10-8 at the 15:38 mark on a 10-foot jumper from Javon Henderson (Detroit, Mich. / University Prep).  A fast-break dunk from Henderson gave WSU a 17-16 lead with 12 minutes to play in the first half.  Tristan Wilson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline) hit a pair of free throws to keep the Warriors close, 23-21, at the 9:54 mark.  A slam by Timothy Huguley (Detroit, Mich / Old Redford Academy) tied the game at 23-23 on the following possession and a triple from Latin Davis, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Milan) gave WSU a 26-23 lead.  Davis connected from behind the arc for the third time with 5:23 left before halftime to stretch the lead to 31-25.  The WSU offense continued to control the tempo and led 41-31 after a deep two-point jumper from Darian Owens-White (Ypsilanti, Mich. / River Rouge) at the 33 second mark, which would be the halftime score.

Two points at the charity stripe from Davis gave the Warriors a 12-point lead (45-33)  at the 17:51 mark.  Davis drilled a triple to extend WSU's lead to 50-37 with 15:41 remaining.  A conventional three-point play by Henderson gave WSU a 59-45 advantage at the the 12:28 mark.  Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) found Henderson for a bucket to extend the visitor's lead to 63-49 with 10:32 left to play.   Northwood cut the WSU lead to eight on a layup from Trey McBride at the 7:49 mark to cap an 8-2 run and a triple from Alec Marty brought the T-Wolves within five.  The momentum stayed with NU and a basket by David Jelinek made it 67-65 with 5:29 remaining.  A floater by Owens-White slowed the NU rally and gave Wayne State a 71-65 lead.  Henderson made it 73-67, but McBride answered with a triple to keep NU within three at the 2:31 mark.  Northwood trailed by one, 75-74, after a basket by Jelinek and then two free throws by Marty gave NU a 76-75 lead.  After a WSU timeout with 10 seconds to play, Davis broke free on an inbounds play and gave WSU a 77-76 lead.  He was fouled on the play but missed the free throw.  Northwood missed a corner three as time expired to give the Warriors a one-point victory.
