Baseball Wraps Up Arizona Trip With Pair Of Losses To Concordia St. Paul

The Malone University baseball team concluded its trip to the Arizona on Tuesday by dropping both games of its doubleheader with Concordia Univeristy (MN) St. Paul at the Tucson Invitational.  The Golden Bears won the opener 4-2 before taking the finale 9-3.

The Pioneers, now 3-10 overall, are scheduled to return to action next Monday (March 17) with a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader at Salem International (WV) University.

Game One Recap
Concordia St. Paul jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the opener after plating an unearned run in the top of the first but Pioneer centerfielder Keanan Locke quickly tied things up with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the second.

The score then remained unchanged until the top of the sixth when the Golden Bears chased home two more runs.  Concordia's lead then grew to 4-1 in the seventh with a two-out RBI single.

Malone cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom fo the seventh, but was unalbe to completely close the gap, falling by the 4-2 final.

Starting pitcher Taylore Baker suffered the loss (1-2) after tossing the first six innings, striking out four while walking three.

The Pioneers registered five hits in the game, one each by five different players.

Game Two Recap
Malone grabbed a 2-0 edge in the top of the first inning of Tuesday's finale, scoring the first tally on an RBI single by catcher Matt Davis and and the second when leftfielder Ryan Froman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The Bears knotted things up by drawing a pair of bases loaded walks in the bottom of the inning and then pulled ahead with a two-run homer in the bottom of the second. 

Concordia then pulled away by plating two runs in the fourth and three more scores in the sixth.  Rightfielder Matt Wheeler doubled and then later came around to score in the seventh to account for the Pioneers' final run.

Right-hander Gunnar Smeyres started on the mound and took the loss (0-3) after tossing the first 1.1 innings.

Wheeler paced the Malone offense, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
