DETROIT – The Wayne State University women's tennis team defeated league opponent Tiffin in comeback fashion during singles play, 5-4, on Sunday. WSU (4-0, 4-0 GLIAC) has won 27 consecutive regular-season GLIAC matches since a 6-3 setback to Northwood on Sept. 11, 2013, and 41 of its last 42 league matches.
DOUBLES • Senior
Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) and junior
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) beat the Dragons' Valentine Mazzola and Bianca Avram 8-6 for the lone WSU doubles point at the second flight.
• Juniors
Lauren Hughes (Detroit, Mich. / Southfield) and
Ashley Walker (Canton, Mich. / Salem) suffered their first doubles loss (4-8) of the season at the third doubles spot.
• Freshmen
Liv Peisachovitz (Vaughan, Ont. / Northview Heights S.S.) and
Dasha Kuznetsova (Moscow, Russia / Moscow School 45) were defeated by Tiffin's Caroline Nelhage and Aimee Kaye in a tiebreaker, 8-9 (4-7) at No. 1 doubles.
SINGLES• Senior co-captain
Julia Kamenko (Toronto, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) sealed the Warriors victory with a 6-2 third set victory over Avram at fifth singles. Kamenko won the first set 6-1, but lost the second set 3-6.
• Mitrache took a two-set win over Nelhage, 6-3, 6-2 at the top singles flight, while Poissant topped Mazzola at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-4.
• Kuznetsova recorded her fourth win at the fourth singles flight, defeating Caroline Harpainter 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
• Peisachovitz suffered her first loss of the season at No. 3 singles, losing in three sets against Adel Musina, 2-6, 6-1, 4-6, while sophomore
Liz Ghellere (Ararangua, Brazil / Unificado) was topped by Kaye, 2-6, 4-6 at sixth singles.
UP NEXT• The Warriors will travel to Allendale, Mich. to play league opponent Grand Valley State this Friday at 2 p.m. WSU defeated the Lakers, 5-4, last season.
