Men's Tennis Shuts Out Michigan Tech

The Warriors garnered their fourth 7-0 win of the season on Saturday.

DETROIT -- The No. 22-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis squad (10-8 overall, 2-0 GLIAC) won its second straight league contest in as many days as WSU downed visiting Michigan Tech (3-12 overall, 0-2 GLIAC) by a 7-0 score on Saturday inside the Duchene Athletic Facility.

It was the Green and Gold's fourth victory in a row, with all four coming at home against Midwest Region opponents in Findlay, Tiffin, Lake Superior State, and MTU.

DOUBLES
Wayne State swept doubles to begin the morning, with all three matches finishing in order by flight.

WSU's third-ranked pairing of Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) won 6-1 over Leon Sell and Jack (Chia Chieh) Lin at the No. 1 spot, before the No. 12-ranked Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and Dom Spicer (London, England) prevailed 6-2 against Eli Pinnoo and Landon Coates at the second flight.

Also winners by a 6-2 score were Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield Township, Mich. / Walled Lake Central (United States Air Force Academy)) and Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany).  They downed Vitor Jordao and Nikolai Prosjanykov at the No. 3 position.

SINGLES
WSU claimed all six singles matches to complete the sweep of the Huskies on Saturday.

First to finish was Hill at the fourth flight, doing so with 6-3 and 6-1 triumphs vs. Adam Fenjiro.  It was Hill's first time playing at the position in his collegiate career.

Next were Wayne State's nationally ranked singles players in Grey (eighth) and Drenth (12th).  Grey defeated Lin at the No. 1 spot by scores of 6-1 and 6-2, while Drenth handled Jordao via 6-2 and 6-4 victories.

Spicer squared off with Sell at the No. 3 position and claimed set wins of 6-4 and 6-3.

Seeing action in singles was Emil Mikkelsen (Soenderborg, Denmark), and the senior answered the call with a 6-4, 6-0 triumph against Pinnoo at the fifth flight.

Capping off the day for the team was Joe Steele (Beverly Hills, Mich. / U. of Detroit Jesuit) at the No. 6 position.  Steele needed a 7-6 (7-4) tie-breaking win over Coates in the first set, before notching a 6-2 victory in the final set.  It was just his second singles match of 2024 and his first victory in the category for the season.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will play the third match of its four-contest home stand against the GLIAC on Friday, April 12 against a challenging Grand Valley State program.  The Warriors and Lakers will hope to play outside on the WSU Tennis Courts beginning at 10 a.m.
