Syracuse, N.Y. – Attackers
Julia Suriani (Buffalo, N.Y./West Seneca East) and
Erica Geremia (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee/SUNY Cortland) each scored five goals to lead the seventh-ranked Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team to an 18-11 victory over Grand Valley State University on Thursday afternoon in non-conference action at Ted Grant Field.
The Dolphins got on the scoreboard first with an unassisted goal by senior midfielder
Laura Hoffman (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) at the 27:43 mark.
After Erika Neumen evened the game at one with 25:54 left off a pass from Carolyn Kraus, Suriani scored a pair of goals in a span of 54 seconds to give the Dolphins the lead for good. She netted her first off a feed from junior attacker
Maggie Monnat (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) just 29 seconds after Neumen scored, while then scoring off a pass from Geremia with 24:31 remaining in the half.
Kira Dosenberry got the Lakers within 3-2 with 23:34 left, but the Dolphins answered with nine of the next 11 goals to blow the game open. Suriani started a 4-0 run by finding the back of the net off a pass from Hoffman with 23:11 to go. Sophomore midfielder
Molly McGuane (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) put the Dolphins up 5-2 with an unassisted tally with 19:00 left, while Geremia followed with two goals in 57 seconds, the first of which was assisted by Monnat.
Following a free-position goal by Neumen and a goal by Brooke Ingraham that was assisted by Neumen, five different Dolphins scored over a span of 10 and one-half minutes. Freshman attacker
Jacqueline Pardee (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) started the streak by finishing off a pass from McGuane with 12:59 remaining. Off the ensuing draw, Geremia put the Dolphins up by five with an unassisted tally. Suriani got Le Moyne into double digits with her fourth goal of the contest at the 10:21 mark off a feed from Geremia. Following three Grand Valley State turnovers and two by the Dolphins, sophomore midfielder
Amari Pollard (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) scored her first goal of the season with 6:14 remaining. Hoffman ended the run with 2:29 left after receiving a pass from Pollard.
Neumen pulled the Lakers within 12-5 at halftime with a free-position goal with 22 seconds left in the opening half.
Le Moyne, which improved to 4-0 against programs from the state of Michigan (3-0 vs. Detroit, 1-0 vs. Grand Valley State), got unassisted goals from Pollard and Suriani over the opening 1:46 of the second half to extend its lead to nine.
Following an unassisted goal by Neumen with 23:41 remaining, Geremia scored off a free-position shot with 20:19 to go and Hoffman followed with her third goal of the game off a feed from McGuane 58 seconds later for a 16-6 lead.
The Lakers, who received votes in this week's IWLCA poll, answered with five of the next six goals to get within 17-11. Rachel Leibovitz posted an unassisted goal with 17:36 remaining, while Zoe Stiemann tallied her sixth goal of the season just nine seconds later to force a Le Moyne timeout. Following a Le Moyne yellow card, Victoria Devine found the back of the net 17 seconds later to make it a 16-9 game.
After almost 10 minutes of scoreless action, during which time the teams combined for six turnovers and five shots that were saved, Geremia tallied her 10th goal of the campaign with an unassisted marker with 5:47 remaining.
Neumen followed with goals at the 4:30 mark and the 1:48 mark to get Grand Valley State within six.
Junior attacker
Claire Monnat (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) scored from the left edge of the crease with 12 seconds remaining to end the game's scoring.
Senior goalkeeper
Molly Marbut (Edgewater, Md./South River) made eight saves (against nine goals) over 50:14 between the pipes to earn the victory. Sarah Zwilsky registered 11 saves in the loss for the Lakers. Le Moyne posted a 35-26 advantage in shots (23-12 in the first half), while recording more ground balls (23-15) and committing fewer turnovers (14-23).
Le Moyne (2-0), which has won its home opener each of its five years at the Division II level, hosts fourth-ranked LIU Post on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
