Women's Basketball Falls At #2-Ashland

Chambers has team-high 13 points and career-best six rebounds.

ASHLAND, Ohio – The Wayne State University women's basketball team (4-5 overall, 2-2 GLIAC) suffered its second consecutive conference setback with a 103-55 loss at No. 2-ranked Ashland University (10-0 overall, 4-0 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
 
The game was tied twice in the early going at 2-2 and 4-4 in the first 90 seconds.  The Warriors kept it close with a pair of Christina Green (Southfield, Mich. / Lathrup) buckets that made the deficit one at 7-6 and 9-8.
 
The Eagles had an 8-2 run in a span of 1:33 to open a 17-10 advantage.  Freshman Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) made a pair of foul shots to cut the margin to five (17-12) at the 5:28 mark.
 
Ashland had a 6-0 run before a triple by junior Sara Ruhstorfer (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Flint Powers Catholic) made it 23-15 with 3:30 remaining in the opening period.  AU ended the first stanza on an 11-0 run as WSU had four turnovers and went 0-for-3 on field goals.
 
Wayne State tallied four of the first nine points in the second quarter and trailed 41-21 with seven minutes left before halftime.  The Warriors were outscored 25-15 in the second stanza and trailed 61-32 at intermission.
 
TEAM STATS
 
Ashland shot 50 percent (40-of-80) from the field compared to 32 percent (17-of-54) for WSU.  AU was 4-of-10 (40 percent) from three-point range, while the Warriors were 3-of-15 (20 percent).  Wayne State made 18 foul shots in 26 attempts (69 percent) with the Eagles shooting 83 percent (19-of-23) from the charity stripe.
 
WSU LEADERS
 
Chambers had a team-high 13 points along with a career-best six rebounds.  Junior Shannon Wilson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Bloomfield Hills) added 10 points and a season-high three assists.  Sophomore Jessica Murphy (Oxford, Mich.) drained two triples in scoring a career-best six points.
 
AU LEADERS
 
Andi Daugherty and Laina Snyder tied for game-high scoring honors with 19 points as five Eagles reached double figures.  Snyder recorded a game-best 13 rebounds with Sara Loomis having seven points, 10 rebounds and five blocks.
 
UP NEXT

 
Wayne State will conclude the 2016 portion of its GLIAC schedule with a home contest on Thursday (Dec. 15) at 5:30 p.m. against Ohio Dominican.  WSU will play at in-region foe Lewis University on Monday, Dec. 19.
