Malone Softball Can't Record Win at Ashland

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
The Malone University softball team (10-20-1, 2-14 GLIAC) strung together 14 hits in their doubleheader at Ashland University but could only translate them into one run, losing both games by scores of 8-0 (5 innings) and 7-1.

Sophomores Alexa Holztrager, Emily Isla, and Desi Hengoed, the first three hitters in the Malone lineup, combined to go 5-for-8 in the game but the Pioneers hit only 1-for-3 with runners in scoring position to leave five on base.

The Eagles pushed across two runs in the first and third innings, three in the fourth and one in the fifth to earn the shortened five-inning victory.

Junior Jillian Coyle fell to 7-9 on the season, working four innings in the circle and giving up eight runs, four of which were earned, on eight hits. Holztrager and Hengoed each picked up two hits for the game with Hengoed's double serving as the only Malone extra-base hit.

Ashland only outhit Malone 8-7 but Malone committed three errors to zero for the Eagles.

In the twinbill, Ashland raced to a 5-0 lead through the first three innings before Malone threatened in the bottom of the fourth inning by loading the bases with one out after back-to-back-to back singles from Freshmen Allison Mercado and Erika Gerber and sophomore Emily Kahoun. An rbi groundout from junior Stephanie Byrne was all Malone could manufacture from the threat to trail 5-1 after four innings.

Runs in the sixth and seventh innings from Ashland made the final tally 7-1. Byrne worked all seven innings yielding seven runs (6 earned) on 14 hits. Gerber led the Malone offense with a 2-for-3 performance.

Malone will enjoy a five day hiatus before returning to the diamond for a home doubleheader against NCAA DII #14 Wayne State University on Friday, Apr. 18th, starting at 3:30 pm.
