Volleyball Falls in Four Sets to Ashland

The Warriors dropped sets one, two and four on Tuesday night.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (7-4 overall, 2-1 GLIAC) continued a busy nine-day stretch by hosting Ashland (10-2 overall, 3-0 GLIAC) on Tuesday night and lost in four sets.  The Eagles won sets one and two by scores of 25-23 and 25-16 before the Warriors took the third set 25-14.  Ashland won the match by winning the fourth set 25-16.  The Warriors are nearing the end of a nine-match home stand and are playing five matches in nine days.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Warriors trailed 4-3 in the first set before going on a 5-0 run to take an 8-4 lead.  Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) pushed the home lead to 10-6 with a kill and a point from Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) made it 15-12.  AU led 20-19 but an Eagles attacking error and another kill from Richardson gave WSU a 22-21 advantage.  The game was tied at 23-23 but Ashland won the final two points to win 25-23.

- A kill from Richardson and back-to-back points from Madleyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central) gave the Warriors a 6-3 lead early in the second set.  The Eagles tied the set at 7-7 and eventually led 15-10.  Later in the game, Ashland used a 6-0 rally to stretch its lead to 21-12.  The Green & Gold were unable to mount a comeback and AU won the set 25-16.

- Olivia Fike (North Branch, Mich.) blocked an AU attack and gave WSU a 7-4 lead in the third set.  Fike and Richardson teamed up for another block to make it 10-5 and WSU would extend the advantage to 12-5 and 15-6.  Julia Malewicz (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Academy for International Studies / Henry Ford II) pushed the lead to 20-10 with a kill.  Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) collected a rare kill to make it 24-12 and Richardson ended the set with a point to give the Warriors a 25-14 victory.

- Wayne State and Ashland were tied at 4-4 but the Eagles would go on a 5-0 run to take an 11-5 lead.  Malewicz capped a 4-0 flurry with a kill to trim the deficit to 13-10.  The momentum stayed with the visitors as AU led 19-11 and would win the set 25-16.
