Men's Tennis Falls, 4-3, on the Road at Toledo

The Warriors fall just short against a Division I opponent.

TOLEDO, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team (2-1 overall) put in a strong effort for its first road test of the spring season, but narrowly fell 4-3 to Division I University of Toledo (4-3 overall) on Thursday afternoon at the Shadow Valley Tennis Club.

DOUBLES
The Warriors started off with strong play in doubles, grabbing the first point of the match.

Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and partner Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) made quick work of their opponents with a 6-0 triumph from the No. 1 doubles spot.

Following up were the pairing at the No. 3 doubles spot, as the duo of Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) and Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield, Township, Mich.) claimed a 6-3 victory.

With the doubles point already secured, Dom Spicer (London, England) and Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) did not finish their match against Toledo's Adam Kovac and Matias Olivero at No. 2 doubles.

SINGLES
WSU had a strong push in singles play to try and win the match, but fell just short.

The first singles match to finish came on No. 4, where Karcz fell in straight sets of 6-3, 6-3 to even the overall score.

Spicer, in his first action since the fall season, dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Krzysztof Wetoszka at the No. 2 spot.

Drenth played tough against a strong opponent, but lost 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1.

With the Warriors down 3-1 in the match, the team scored the next point as Laws pulled through at No. 5, winning 7-5, 7-5 over his opponent.

The Rockets grabbed the match victory with their point at No. 6, as Joe Kelt (Ilkley, West Yorkshire, England) dropped a very close match, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

Not to be forgotten about, however, Grey kept up a strong start to the spring season in singles play, as he rallied back after losing the first set 6-3 to nab the final two, 6-2, 6-3. Grey improves to a perfect 3-0 in singles to begin the spring schedule.

FROM COACH MORROW
"Hard fought loss for the boys. No. 1 doubles [Drenth and Grey] played about as clean as they could and looked unbelievable against a very good team. No. 2 doubles [Spicer and Laws] were in a dog-fight and looked good. No. 3 doubles [Karcz and Kitayama] played very nicely and pulled out a strong win. In singles, Cedric played a really high-level player and I'm proud of the way he fought in what was probably his toughest match at Wayne State. Dom wasn't quite himself, but it was great to have him back on the court. Daniel pulled out a great third set for us and looked good in doing so - he had a nice day overall. Niklas lost a close one against a challenging opponent. Luke played a nice, clean match and handled business in a win. It came down to Joe [Kelt] and, unfortunately, he lost in the third set, but I'm proud of the way he played as a freshman."

UP NEXT
Wayne State will have a quick turnaround as they will play a pair of home matches on Friday, February 10. First on the docket is Case Western Reserve at 10 a.m., before a meeting with Northwestern Ohio at 6 p.m.
