Softball Claims 9-1 Win At Hillsdale

Spaccarotelli clobbers three home runs.

Hillsdale, Mich. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (28-7 overall, 6-2 GLIAC) completed a conference doubleheader sweep at Hillsdale College (6-16 overall, 1-9 GLIAC) Tuesday afternoon with a 9-1 triumph in six innings in the nightcap.

The Warriors snapped a scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the third.  Junior Rachel Spaccarotelli (Ray, Mich. / Romeo) led off the frame with a home run to center field.  Alison Allen (Redford, Mich. / Farmington Hills Mercy) followed with a single and advanced to second on a fielding error.  Jaci Banton (Richmond Hill, Ont. / Cardinal Carter) had a single to center plating Allen, and scored after three more consecutive singles off the bats of Rebecca Stanley (Waterloo, Ont. / Waterloo C.I.), Becca Ryan (Westland, Mich. / Dearborn Divine Child) and Brittany Omelanchuk (Brooklin, Ont. / Wilson S.S.).

For the second consecutive inning, Spaccarotelli had a leadoff home run (in the fourth) blasting a shot to center field.

WSU increased its lead with a three-run fifth.  Omelanchuk had a one-out single, and pinch-runner Nicole Abel (Kitchener, Ont. / St. Mary's) advanced to second on a single by Stephanie LeClair (Kitchener, Ont. / Forest Heights C.I.).  After a foul out, Spaccarotelli smacked her third home run of the contest, a three-run shot, which is believed to be a Wayne State record.

The Chargers tallied an unearned run in the sixth on a single, a stolen base, a passed ball, and a throwing error.

Wayne State completed the contest with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.  Makelle Barski (Trenton, Mich.) had a leadoff single and advanced to third when Banton's fly to center was misplayed.  Stanley had a two-run single to right field ending the match.

Sophomore Sam Cain (Taylor, Mich. / Kennedy) went the distance in the circle for WSU striking out four and walking two while allowing just one unearned run on two hits in six innings.

Taylor Schulty allowed nine earned runs on 13 hits with four strikeouts in five-plus innings.

Spaccarotelli went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, five RBI and 12 total bases.  Allen, Stanley and Omelanchuk each had two hits for the Warriors.

The last WSU player to hit two home runs in a contest was Allen on April 8, 2009, vs. Hillsdale.

The last WSU player with at least 10 total bases in a game was Johanna Proulx at Gannon on April 24, 2004.

Wayne State returns home to face Ashland (Saturday at 1 pm) and Tiffin (Sunday at noon), two regionally ranked opponents.
