Women's Hoops Returns to Win Column at Malone

Nine different Warriors recorded assists in the 76-68 win.

CANTON - Ohio -- The 10th-ranked Wayne State University women's basketball team (15-2, 11-2 GLIAC) looked to begin another winning streak after seeing its 10-game winning streak come to an end at Ashland on Jan. 24. The Warriors overcame some sharp shooting from Malone (7-10, 5-8 GLIAC) to win 76-68 on Thursday night inside Osborne Hall.

WSU led 18-14 at the 13:28 mark of the opening half, powered by nine points from Shareta Brown (Pontiac, Mich. / Grand Blanc). The Pioneers used eight three pointers to account for 24 of the team's first 26 points including 21 straight points from behind the arc.

The Green & Gold defense tightened and held Malone without a field goal for over four minutes, which helped WSU overcome a 30-29 deficit at the five-minute mark. The dry spell propelled WSU to a 41-34 advantage on a Brittany Streetman (Warren, Mich. / Lincoln) triple with 1:11 to play. That seven-point lead was the largest for the Warriors in the half.

Brown finished the period with 10 points and five boards as nine Warriors scored in the half. At the break, WSU led 41-36.

The Warriors opened the second half on a 12-4 run to extend their lead to 53-40 with 15:24 remaining. WSU controlled the tempo of the contest until a 4:44 scoring drought allowed the Pioneers back into the game. Malone trimmed the visitor's lead to 65-58 with 6:20 to play.

Amber McCann (Southfield, Mich. / Southfield-Lathrup ) ended the drought with a jumper in the paint to give WSU a 67-58 lead.

Malone would not go quietly as a 5-0 run from the Pioneers pulled the home squad within three at 69-66 with just over 2:30 left in the game. McCann's jumper was the only field goal for WSU in a span of 9:21. Streetman came through with a baseline trey that beat the shot clock to put the Warriors ahead 74-68 with 1:26 to play.

WSU's defense held Malone scoreless over the final two minutes to secure the 76-68 victory.

Brown posted her 16th double-double of the season with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Streetman finished with 15 points including 3-of-4 from behind the arc. WSU shot 87.4 percent (21-of-24) from the free throw line. Nine Warriors dished out assists led by Jackie Jones (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) and Gabby Machado (Pontiac, Mich. / Northern) with three each.

The Pioneers relied heavily on the three-point shot, going 12-of-32 from deep.

WSU returns to the Matthaei on Saturday to host Walsh at 1 PM in game that can be seen on Comcast 900.
