Baseball Wins Once on Saturday

The Warriors took game one against Ohio Dominican.

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio -- The Wayne State University baseball program (4-3 overall) continued its early portion of the 2018 schedule on Saturday with two games against Ohio Dominican (6-3 overall) at V.A. Memorial Stadium.  The Warriors took game one 5-1 before dropping game two 11-0.

GAME ONE (W, 5-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Both teams were quiet until the top of the third inning when WSU scored twice on three hits.  Patrick Adams (Detroit, Mich. / De La Salle) began the frame with a double to right field and Zach Girard (Sleepy Hollow, Ill. / Dundee Crown) followed with an RBI single up the middle and then stole second base.  Devin Rose (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Orchard Lake St. Mary's) singled before a groundout by Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) produced another run.

- Starter Jared Tobey (St. Clair, Mich.) (1-0) was sharp and kept the Panthers off the scoreboard in each of the next three innings.  Baldwin crushed a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to extend WSU's lead to 5-0.  Hunter Brown (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview) replaced Tobey to begin the seventh inning and allowed a run on two hits but was able to limit the damage and secure the victory.

AT THE PLATE
- Rose and Baldwin and Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson) all posted two-hit games, while Baldwin drove in a team-best three runs.

ON THE MOUND
- Tobey earned his first victory of the season powered by a career-high 11 strikeouts in six shutout innings.  Brown allowed an earned run on two hits in his one inning of work.

GAME TWO (L, 0-11)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Panthers scored early and often in game two including three runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning and another run in the bottom of the second inning.  ODU scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the third inning and added a solo home run in the fourth.

- Three hits netted two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning for the Panthers to stretch their lead to 11-0.  The Green & Gold offense was ice cold and only produced three base hits.  The Warriors committed four errors to aid in ODU's offense.

AT THE PLATE
- JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) went 2-for-3 and Troy Daring, Jr. (Brampton, Ont.) collected WSU's third and final hit.

ON THE MOUND
- Tyler Waldrop (Grand Ledge, Mich.) started and allowed six earned runs over two and a 1/3 innings.  Dillon McInerny (Richmond, Mich.) allowed a run in 2/3 of an inning before Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) worked the next three frames, allowing three earned runs and striking out three batters.  Richard Hovde (Saline, Mich.) was effective and tossed two scoreless innings with two punch outs.

UP NEXT
- WSU will conclude the weekend with a third game against the Panthers.  First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m..
