MIDLAND, Mich. – The Wayne State University women's tennis team (6-6 overall, 6-5 GLIAC) fell, 5-2, to third-seeded Grand Valley State (10-2 overall, 9-2 GLIAC) in the opening round of the GLIAC Tournament on Friday evening at the Midland Community Tennis Center.
DOUBLES RESULTS
- Seniors
Lauren Hughes (Detroit, Mich. / Southfield) and
Ashley Walker (Canton, Mich. / Salem) topped Abby Perkins and Liv Christman in a close, 9-7, match at the third doubles flight.
- Junior
Liz Ghellere (Ararangua, Brazil) and sophomore
Liv Peisachovitz (Vaughan, Ont.) lost, 8-6, to Madi Ballard and Rachel Sumner at No. 1 doubles, while sophomore
Dasha Kuznetsova (Moscow, Russia) and freshman
Julia Walz (Rastatt, Germany) were blanked, 8-0, by Aimee Moccia and Allie Sweeney at the second doubles position.
SINGLES RESULTS
- Kuznetsova topped Ballard in two sets (6-4, 6-0) at the first singles flight, and Peisachovitz was beat, 6-3, 6-3, by Sweeney at No. 2 singles.
- Ghellere fell, 6-4, 6-1, to Perkins at the third singles position, while sophomore
Astrid Ciellza (Tecumseh, Ont.) recorded a two-set loss (6-1, 6-1) to Christman at the fifth singles flight.
UP NEXT
- The Warriors will take on No. 7 Michigan Tech (6-6 overall, 6-5 GLIAC) in the second round of the conference tournament on Oct. 29 at 3:45 p.m. WSU defeated the Huskies, 5-4, in the regular season.
