Warrior Men's Tennis Defeats Lake Superior, 9-0

-- The Wayne State University men's tennis team improved to 4-1 in the GLIAC on Sunday, winning its second-straight home match of the weekend. The Warriors (5-6 overall) defeated visiting Lake Superior State University, 9-0, at the Multipurpose Indoor Facility.

The Warriors dropped just one match all weekend, beating Michigan Tech and the Lakers by a combined score of 17-1. Wayne State improved to 2-1 at home this season with the wins.

The Warriors swept all three doubles matches for the second time in as many days. Senior Michael FitzGerald (Grosse Ile, Mich. / Grosse Ile) and freshman Clement Charriere (Marseille, France) won their fourth straight match at No. 2 doubles, winning 8-3 over the Lakers.

Senior Melvin Joseph (Northville, Mich. / Northville) and sophomore Mohamed Fazyl Kechai (Paris, France) won 9-7 at the third flight in doubles. WSU pulled out its third victory in doubles after junior Trey Keating (Troy, Mich. / Troy) and freshman Stephane Robineau (Paris, France) won four of the final five games to earn a come-from-behind 9-7 win.

Leading 3-0, Wayne State rolled to the win with victories in all six singles matches. Senior Gopinath Menta (Hyderabad, India) earned his second victory of the weekend Sunday, dropping just one game on his way to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.

Charriere improved to 11-5 this season in singles, earning his second win in as many days at the top flight. He defeated LSSU's Pedro Nunes, 6-1, 6-1.

Robineau (No. 2 singles), FitzGerald (No. 3 singles) and Joseph (No. 5 singles) also posted straight-set wins for the Warriors. Fazyl Kechai lost the first set of his No. 4 singles match in a tiebreaker, but lost just four games the rest of the way on his way to a 6-7 (2-7), 6-2, 6-2 victory, his fourth straight win in singles.

The Warriors return to the court Saturday, April 5 for a road match at Ferris State. Match time is set for 10 a.m.

NOTES
FitzGerald and Joseph have also each moved into the top five in WSU program history in both singles and doubles victories. FitzGerald is fourth with 46 career wins in singles, while Joseph's win Sunday put him in sole possession of fifth place with 44 singles wins. FitzGerald also moved into a tie for third place all-time in doubles wins with his victory Sunday. He is tied with Lech Czenwikski and Thomas Ducret with 52 career wins in doubles.
