Baseball Falls 6-3 to UIS, Record-Breaking Season Ends

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball team (37-19) saw its historic season come to an end on Sunday afternoon with a 6-3 loss to No. 23 Illinois-Springfield (46-8) at Harwell Field.  The game was scoreless through four innings as starter Nicholas O'Dea (Livonia, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) (3-5) was solid in his final start of his career.  However, a run in the fifth and five runs in the sixth for UIS would be too much to overcome for the Green & Gold.

The win on Saturday over Walsh broke the record for wins in a season.  The Warriors hosted an NCAA tournament at Harwell Field for the first time in program history, played in the NCAA postseason for the ninth time in program history and seventh under head coach Ryan Kelley.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Warriors looked poised to score first in the top of the second inning following a double from Rudy Ramirez (Brighton, Mich.) and a single by Jacoby Dale (Roseville, Mich.).  But back-to-back strikeouts by Cameron Zunkel allowed the Prairie Stars to escape without any damage.

A base running blunder in the top of the fourth slowed what could have been a big inning as WSU collected a pair of base hits.

A hit batter and back-to-back singles gave UIS a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.  A line-drive double play to Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich.) at shortstop limited the damage to one run.

Three hits, a hit-by-pitch and a fielding error in the bottom of the sixth inning extended the UIS advantage to 6-0.

A single from Finkbeiner and a double by Ramirez put runners at second and third with no outs in the top of the seventh inning.  An RBI single by Dale pushed across the first run of the day for WSU.  CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont.) made it 6-2 with an RBI fielder's choice.

Wayne State used three hits and an error in the ninth to plate one run but a 4-3 double play slowed the momentum as the Prairie Stars collected the final out to secure the tournament title,  Davis Graham (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) drove in the run with a pinch-hit RBI single into left field.  Illinois-Springfield advances to host next week's NCAA D2 Midwest Super Regional against Quincy.

AT THE PLATE
The Warriors out-hit UIS 13-7 and were led by three hits from Finkbeiner, Ramirez and Dale.  Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) went 2-for-5.

ON THE MOUND
O'Dea allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits over five and a 1/3 innings.  He struck out three and did not walk anyone.

Brennan Cox (Taylor, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) was impressive out of the bullpen, not allowing a run in two and 2/3 of an inning.
