Volleyball Bests GVSU in Four Sets

The Warriors open GLIAC play with a convincing victory over the Lakers.

DETROIT -- After a 5-3 start in the non-conference portion of its schedule, the Wayne State University volleyball program (6-3 overall, 1-0 GLIAC) began league play on Friday night against Grand Valley State (7-2 overall, 0-1 GLIAC) and the Warriors won in four sets, taking set one, two and four by scores of 25-10. 25-18 and 25-23.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wayne State led the first set 6-3 and back-to-back kills from Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) made it 10-3 in favor of the Warriors.  Two Lakers' errors and and ace from Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) extended the Green & Gold advantage to 14-4.  Olivia Fike (North Branch, Mich.) pushed the home lead to 17-5 with a solo block and the Warriors would go on to win 25-10, ending the set with consecutive kills from Richardson.

- Richardson continued to have the hot hand early in the second set and staked WSU to a 5-4 lead before the Lakers answered with a 3-0 run to take a 7-5 lead.  GVSU held onto a 12-11 lead but the Warriors used a 5-0 run to regain the lead, 16-12.  A point from Frazee made it 19-14 and the margin would grow to 23-15 before WSU would go on to win 25-18.

-  Grand Valley State led the third set 8-4 and 12-8.  A 4-0 run by Wayne State would tie the game at 14-14 but the Lakers responded with a 4-0 rally of their own to take an 18-14 advantage.  GVSU won the third set 25-19 and avoided the sweep.

- The fourth set was a thrilling battle throughout and WSU trailed 5-1 and eventually 7-3.  The Warriors tied the set at 7-7 on a GVSU attack error.  Madelyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central) kept the game tied at 9-9 with a kill.  The set was tied at 11-11, 12-12, 13-13 and 14-14 before WSU took a 15-14 advanatge on a kill from Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.).  The Lakers led 17-15 and 18-16 but WSU began to find its footing, leading 24-20.  The Lakers would trim the deficit to one, 24-23, before a kill from Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore) ended the set and the match.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Richardson posted her third straight match with at least 20 kills, finishing with a match-high 21.  She also notched her fifth double-double of the season with 13 digs.  Krenz chipped in 11 kills, while Duffield dished out 34 assists.  Ellie Rodriguez (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) collected 19 digs, while Haley Tenelshof (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Jenison) finished with 18.
