Volleyball Victorious on Senior Day

The Warriors inch closer to securing their first trip to the GLIAC Tournament since 2012.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (19-8, 10-5 GLIAC) accomplished a few milestones with its 3-1 win over Walsh (9-17, 2-12 GLIAC) on Saturday.  First, the Warriors all but secured their first trip to the GLIAC Tournament since 2012 and secondly Wayne State matched its most wins in the last 17 seasons (19 wins in 2009).  WSU will still need to officially punch its postseason ticket on the road during the final week of the regular season.

Two more wins for WSU will most likely result in a home GLIAC Quarterfinal match on Nov. 16th.

In addition, prior to the match, WSU honored its four seniors as Brittany Guldan (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central), Avery Punches (Rockford, Mich.), Emily Norscia (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Churchill) and Mikayla Shell (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) were all recognized after successful collegiate careers.  The quartet played in a combined 268 matches during the past four seasons for the Green & Gold.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The visiting Cavaliers set the tone early in the first set that it would be hard fought match throughout by winning the first four points.  The Warriors trailed by one or two points nearly the entire game as Walsh was able to find an answer for the WSU attack.  Wayne State trailed 16-15, 17-16, 18-17, 19-18 and 20-19.  A combo block from Guldan and Shell followed by a solo block from Shell gave WSU its first lead of the set at 23-22.  However, Walsh won four of the final five points to take game one 26-24.

- The Warriors led the second set 8-3 after blocks from Shell and Punches and a WU attack error.  Consecutive kills from Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) kept WSU on top 13-8 and another point from Richardson gave the Green & Gold a 15-12 advantage.  Back-to-back attack errors by the Cavs aided in WSU taking a 21-18 lead before Walsh tied the ste at 23-23.  WSU answered with kills from Richardson and Michelle Asiedu (Holland, Ohio / Springfield) to win 25-23.

- Norscia broke a 5-5 tie with an early kill in the third set.  WSU went on a 7-0 run to lead comfortably 13-6.  The Warriors continued to control the third game and led 19-10 after a point from Punches.  WSU would win the set 25-15 to take a 2-1 match lead.

- Wayne State led the fourth set 7-4 after a kill by Norscia.  Madison Kielty (Plymouth, Mich. / Canton) notched a service ace to extend WSU's lead to 14-9 before the Warriors won the race to 20 on a Cavaliers' error.  Walsh stormed back to cut the deficit to 22-20 after a 5-0 run and eventually tied the st at 24-24.  Richardson came through in the clutch and collected two kills to win the set and the match.

UP NEXT
- Wayne State will begin the final week of the regular season at Tiffin on Thursday with first serve scheduled for 7 p.m.
