Volleyball Grabs Five-Set Home Win Over Michigan Tech

Katie Hasebein amassed an incredible 42 digs in Malone's 3-2 home win over Michigan Tech Saturday.

The Malone University volleyball team may be starting to enjoy five-set matches as the Pioneers reeled off their second-straight victory that has gone the distance in rallying to defeat GLIAC opponent Michigan Tech University at home on Saturday by the score of 21-25, 29-27, 29-27, 15-25, 15-11.  In its most recent five-set affair (last Saturday), Malone topped Saginaw Valley State University 3-2 with a 17-15 nod in the final set.

With the win, Malone improved to 6-8 overall and to 5-4 in the GLIAC while the Huskies fell to 6-10 and 4-5 in conference play.

For Malone, defensive specialist/libero Katie Hasebein recorded one of the most impressive dig performances in recent program history as she tallied an incredible 42 digs in the match.  Along with that superb defensive effort, outside hitter Taylor Slauterbeck and middle hitter Elizabeth Maczuzak posted one solo block and two block assists each.

Four Pioneers racked up double digit kills as Slauterbeck led the way with 13, followed by outside hitter Sarah Brent with 11. Maczuzak and outside hitter Anna Hays contributed 10 kills each while middle hitter Haley Kool added nine more.  Setter Brianna Clegg dished out 28 assists while Jordan Sollars was very close to that number with 24 of her own. In addition, Clegg amassed six service aces in the match.

Malone will be back in action next Friday when the team will travel to GLIAC foe Northwood University (MI) for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
